Building Wildfire Resilience
Yesterday, Anderson Island took a major step forward in community safety. We were thrilled to welcome James from the Pierce Conservation District and Janelle from the Mason Conservation District, along with Graham, an AmeriCorps volunteer. Together, they spent the day visiting six local homes, providing personalized overviews of wildfire risks and actionable steps to reduce them.
The home visits were incredibly helpful. Each property brought unique insights and a few surprises for the homeowners. We walked away with invaluable, practical knowledge, including:
The 5-Foot Buffer: Learning the critical importance of maintaining a clean, defensible zone immediately surrounding our homes.
Clearing Dead Matter: Understanding exactly how and where to remove dry, accumulated debris that acts as fuel.
Smart Storage: Discovering how to safely store gasoline and other flammables using dedicated fire cabinets.
Moving from Education to Action
This hands-on neighborhood walk was a direct follow-up to James’s presentation last month at the Archival Building. During that talk, he introduced us to the Conservation District's resources and, crucially, the Firewise USA program.
The Firewise program is all about neighborhood resilience. It relies on small, dedicated groups of neighbors who commit to improving wildfire prevention on their properties. Even better, these groups can collaborate on larger community projects funded by resources from the Pierce Conservation District.
What’s Next for Anderson Island?
Because our island community is unique, we are currently exploring innovative new models that might allow us to establish a cohesive, Firewise community framework for the entire island.
We are incredibly grateful to James, Janelle, and Graham for sharing their expertise, and we eagerly look forward to their future visits. Fire safety is a team effort, and building a resilient island starts right at your front door.
